I'm Thankful For You! Happy Thanksgiving from Elegant Affairs

Thanksgiving is the appointed time
for focusing on the good in our lives.
In each of our days,
we can find small blessings,
but too often we overlook them,
choosing instead to spend our time
paying attention to problems.
We give our energy
to those who cause us trouble
instead of those who bring peace.
Starting now,
let's be on the lookout
for the bits of pleasure in each hour,
and appreciate the people who
bring love and light to everyone
who is blessed to know them.
You are one of those people.
On Thanksgiving,
I'm thankful for you.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Spring Weddings: Spring Wedding Hair Tips & Tricks

Spring Weddings: Spring Wedding Hair Tips & Tricks

Be sure your 'do makes it to the wedding altar with this guide to seasonal wedding hair sanity.
Photo: Red Ribbon Studio
While spring weather brings fresh flowers and fragrant gardens, it can also wreak havoc on hair by causing tons of frizzy flyaways. Here are five steps to spring weather-prepped wedding hair.

1. Work with What You've Got

No matter what your natural hair texture is, humid weather isn't the time to force your hair into an unnatural style. If your hair is curly, find a bridal 'do that embraces your curls. If your hair is straight but tends to curl up in humid weather, consider finding a look that incorporates loose, light curls.

2. Blot-dry Your Hair

The last time you wash your hair before the wedding, gently blot it dry with a towel to get rid of excess moisture. Don't rub -- you'll further dry out any broken or damaged hairs, increasing the chance of frizz. Keep in mind that frizz is caused by hair trying to grab moisture from the air, so the rougher your hair cuticles are (whether your hair naturally has a coarse texture or is damaged from coloring or styling), the worse the frizz.

3. Apply a Frizz-fighting Serum

After you've towel-blotted and before you blow-dry, apply an antifrizz serum (or a strong-hold gel for more intense results) to your damp hair. Once you've applied the serum, comb it through so it's distributed evenly.

4. Use the "Cool" Shot

Once you finish blow-drying, give your hair a blast of cool air using the "cool" setting on your blow-dryer. Hot air opens the hair cuticle while cold air closes it and seals in the moisture.

5. Apply More Serum

Give your freshly dried hair a second application of frizz-fighter (pomade or gel works well). Finally, consider keeping a little on hand throughout the wedding day to use for smoothing down any strands that may curl up.

Tips for Sticking to a Wedding Budget

Actual wedding costs depend mainly on size, scale, and location. Keeping this in mind while planning for a budget wedding is critical to keeping costs down. A formal wedding with 250 guests obviously costs more than a backyard fete with 60 guests. And a wedding in New York City costs more than the same function in Iowa City.
Before you get too discouraged, do some research to find out average wedding-related costs in your area. Doing some legwork early in the wedding planning process can save you money later. Attend a bridal show or two and make a note of the prices vendors advertise. Or call around to several wedding vendors in your area and ask what different packages cost and what they include.
In many cases, extra expenses arise because couples give in to impulses or requests from family members and close friends. Or they simply don’t keep a close eye on what they’re spending.
Here are some tricks to help you stick to your budget:
  • Make sure you both understand and agree to the budget you’ve worked out. Think of it as good practice for merging your finances after the wedding.
  • Post your budget in a place where you’ll see it often, such as on the refrigerator. If you and your fiancĂ©(e) don’t live together, make sure each of you has a copy of the budget you’ve agreed on.
  • Discuss any adjustments before you include them in your budget. For example, if you find a cake topper you love, but it costs $50 more than you budgeted for, talk to your intended before you commit to spending the extra money.
  • Look for other areas you could trim to compensate for an additional expense. Say you forgot to include your great-aunt and her husband in your guest list, and your mother insists that you invite them. If your reception cost is $40 per guest, you’ll need to shave $80 from somewhere else in the budget — perhaps by deciding on a less expensive bouquet or choosing less expensive centerpieces.
  • Write down any changes or adjustments you’ve agreed to. That way, you won’t experience misunderstandings later.
The tighter your budget, the more important it is to build in a cushion for unanticipated expenses. A slush fund of between 10% and 15% of your total budget gives you breathing room when one of your line items costs a bit more than you expect. Plus, by setting this money aside upfront, you don’t have to frantically redo your budget to find the extra funds.

Just Engaged: Your First Wedding Planning To-Dos

Just Engaged: Your First Wedding Planning To-Dos

You said yes -- what now? Read on for the basics for planning a wedding.

Once the initial shock of being engaged wears off (and you take a second to peel your eyes away from that sparkly ring on your finger!), you'll need to make a lot of decisions. Don't get overwhelmed -- here are the first nine things you need to do after you get engaged.

Set a Timetable

The first thing to consider is how long your engagement will be. This will depend on a couple of factors, such as your ideal wedding date and how much time you'll need to prepare. A typical engagement lasts anywhere from six months to a year and a half or more. If you got engaged during the holidays but always wanted a summer wedding, make sure you've got enough time to plan without making yourselves wedding-crazy, and keep in mind that many of the best vendors and reception sites book a year or more in advance.

Envision the Style

Your wedding style will be reflected first and foremost in the location, whether it's a luxe ballroom or an intimate backyard reception. Discuss with your fiance where your wedding will take place (in one of your hometowns or in the city where you currently live, for example), and then start scouting sites that can accommodate your wedding style. http://www.avelegantaffairs.com/

Set Your Budget

In the end, dollars, not dreams, are a main determining factor for the size and style of your wedding. So, what affects the price tag?

  • Formality: In general, the more formal the reception, the more expensive, considering you'll have to match the site, food, and decor to the overall upscale tone.
  • Date and time: Saturdays, summer months, and evenings tend to be the most costly times to have a reception.
  • Location: In many cases, a wedding in a major metropolitan area is simply more expensive than in a smaller town.

Determine a Date

Choosing a wedding date can be tougher than you'd think. There are a few things to consider: How much time will you need to prepare for your wedding? Do any loved ones having a conflicting graduation, vacation, or pregnancy due date? If you have your heart set on a particular place, caterer, band, or photographer, the availability of these crucial vendors may also play a large part in your decision. Try to avoid dates of big conventions or other events that draw large crowds, since that might make it harder for out-of-town guests to get hotel rooms. Find out more wedding dates to avoid here.

Once you've picked the date, start your wedding checklist for a to-do list of what to do when.

Announce Your Engagement

Call your local newspaper, your alumni magazine, and anywhere else you want your engagement announcement to appear. Find out the name of the appropriate editor or department and ask for the writer's guidelines or a standardized form, if available. Also, ask if there's a fee for publication. Here's what you need to know if you want to have an engagement photo session, plus a list of contacts for major newspapers.

You can also broadcast the news with a free wedding website.

Choose Your Attendants

It's time to honor your closest friends and family members by picking your wedding parties. Remember, the earlier you ask, the sooner you can enlist their help. (Here's help if you're not sure who to choose.) Keep in mind that your wedding party is agreeing to spend their hard-earned money and donate their precious time -- be considerate and kind by informing everyone about all your plans, showing them a good time, and making sure they know how much you appreciate them.

Make a Guest List

As you begin to build your guest list, you'll need to consider a number of factors. If you have a particular ceremony or reception site in mind, for instance, you're going to be limited by how many people it can accommodate (you can't squeeze 300 people into a lighthouse). Would you rather have one-on-one time with each guest or to throw a once-in-a-lifetime party for all your friends and family? If Mom and Dad are adamant about inviting throngs of friends and family, you'll have to hear them out -- especially if they're footing a major part of the bill. Obviously, the more relatives you must invite, the larger your list will be. And more guests means a bigger bill, as catering costs are generally calculated on a per-head basis. So, in addition to location, your budget will have a big influence on the size of your guest list.

Create and manage your online wedding guest list.

Consider a Consultant

If you're a super-busy couple, hire a full-time wedding consultant to help you prepare your entire event, from the announcement to the honeymoon. You can also hire a part-time consultant to devise a wedding blueprint -- including budget, schedule, and lists of good vendor and site choices -- before you launch solo into the preparations. Another option is a day-of coordinator (which we definitely recommend), who will make sure everything goes as planned on your wedding day.

Find a consultant in your area with our local wedding vendor search.

Start Gown Shopping

It's never too early to begin thinking about your wedding dress. Start by figuring out which style will look best on you. How? Learn the lingo before stepping foot in a dress salon. Read up on silhouettes, necklines, trains, and hues that might flatter you. Season will also affect your choice. Getting married in the sweltering summer? Go with lightweight fabrics such as chiffon, linen, or organza. Having a winter wedding? Brocade, faux fur, and velvet fabrics will keep you warm. Satin, shantung, silk, and tulle are perfect year-round.

AV Elegant Affairs; YOUR Certified Wedding Planner

The first day of spring came and went, and if you have lived in the Antelope Valley for even one year, you will find that the spring season will come and go just as quickly. Summer comes fast for us AV residents, so if you’re looking to have a beautiful spring wedding; you better act FAST!! Technically, the last day of spring is June 21st, but we all know it gets warmer and gives an apparent "summer" feeling before that. So what are some things to do, to implement a spring wedding NOW?

GET THOSE INVITATIONS OUT!
Don’t wait! Send out the invitations and get your guests excited for the spring themed wedding! This is one of the FIRST steps for a spring wedding. Spring “themed” invitations usually have light colors, spring scenery, and beautiful flowers. There are a ton of different wedding invitations motivated by spring, affordable for any budget. Think affordable for your invitations so you can splurge on the wedding dĂ©cor!

PICK THE PERFECT DRESS!
A lot of the reason spring weddings are so popular is because of the beautiful weather! The weather is not too hot and not too cold. It is the best season to pick a more versatile dress, opposed to restrictions on your dress due to rain, snow, scorching sun, etc. Spring weddings also allow room for adding an elegant touch of color to the wedding dress. You have many colors, and styles to choose from. So think outside the box and have some fun with it! Keep in mind that dark colors absorb the heat BUT help with reflecting rays. If your wedding is indoors, definitely opt for lighter colors!

GOT FLOWERS?
Spring brings tons of savings if you purchase flowers that are in season. Allium, Anemone, Cherry Blossom, Daffodil, Lilac, and Violets are just SOME of the flowers that bloom in springtime. With a wide variety it should be simple to choose the flower that most inspires you and catches your eye.

SPRING RECEPTION; WE DO THOSE TOO!
Why stop at the wedding for the spring theme? Brighten up your reception with a spring based wedding venue. Let your guests enjoy the beautiful spring weather outdoors. The theme of spring can be carried through to your reception with spring wedding favors, spring decorations and even a spring menu!

There are quite a few spring wedding favors to choose from that embody the atmosphere of spring. From beach chair tea light place card holders to seashell place card holders to lily pens in a gift box, it would seem that your imagination is the only thing that limits you from finding the most unique spring favors.
Other popular spring wedding favors are seed packets (to thank guests for their contribution in "growing" your love) or birds’ nests.

DECORATIONS FOR YOUR PERFECT WEDDING DAY!
Try purchasing decorations that are pastel blue, pink or lavender. You could also put seasonal flowers up as centerpieces at the reception tables. Instead of having wedding guests throw rice or bird seed, you could have them release butterflies or throw rose petals. The sky is the limit, so think BIG and remember it’s YOUR day and your imagination can run wild.

The Noble and the Brave: A Veteran's Day Tribute

The Noble and the Brave:
A Veteran's Day Tribute

When America had an urgent need,
These brave ones raised a hand;
No hesitation held them back;
They were proud to take a stand.
They left their friends and family;
They gave up normal life;
To serve their country and their God,
They plowed into the strife.
They fought for freedom and for peace
On strange and foreign shores;
Some lost new friends; some lost their lives
In long and brutal wars.
Other veterans answered a call
To support the ones who fought;
Their country had requirements for
The essential skills they brought.
We salute every one of them,
The noble and the brave,
The ones still with us here today,
And those who rest in a grave.
So here’s to our country’s heroes;
They’re a cut above the rest;
Let’s give the honor that is due
To our country’s very best.

A Surprise Wedding Proposal Story - Caught on Film!

A Surprise Wedding Proposal Story - Caught on Film!

Today's blog entry is a little wedding fairytale! This is Lee and Matt, and he has the thumbs up from all the girls in the office today. The rest of this story is brought to you by their lovelyphotographer!

Her favorite number is 11. She loves ice skating. She's always wanted to get married on Friday 11/11/11. He contacted and hired me before Christmas [so that we could do this shoot on 1/1/11]. We made plans via email; I checked his Facebook page to know what they look like, etc.

(This is the famous statue at the World famous Rockfeller Center skating rink)
The day of we sent text messages to each other. I positioned myself at the edge of the rink and he spotted me.  After they slowly went around 2-3 times (he's not an ice skater), he stopped, hugged her, and got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.

She later said that she thought it was a joke because they were still waiting to get engaged. People on and around the rink applauded and cheered and they took 2 more laps around the rink.

Congratulations Lee and Matt!

Tips & Tricks: The Big Day Wedding Look with Benefitcosmetics

Whether you're the stunning bride , beautiful bridesmaid, or good-looking guest, get ready to say "I do" to this wedding look.

Before foundation, pat the POREfessional along your t-zone and anywhere extra shiny lingers. Next apply hello flawless oxygen wow for a luminous complexion.

Now ladies, blush is important. Wedding photographers dish that this is their number one recommendation for brides and bridesmaids.

With benetint cheek stain brush three strokes on the apples of your cheeks & blend quickly with fingertip. Next, sweep sugarbomb blush with a blush brush for even application. Matte blush photographs much better than those with shimmer, which can make your face appear metallic & shiny.

For the eyes, apply creaseless cream shadow in RSVP over lids. Since there are always a ton of photos, load up on false lashes. They help to add more drama and accentuate the eyes.

After, hide the evidence with a quick sweep of a black liner, right along the lash line. Complete the look with they're real mascara.

Ditch your heels on the dance floor, but always keep your lipstick close. Finish your look with nice 'n teasy, a universally flattering rosy pink. And there you have it! Our Benefit bridal look!! It's love at first site.
